Our great nation wouldn’t be the power it is if it wasn’t for the sacrifice of our past and present military. Defending our country of 50 states is not an easy thing to do! Much of America loves to enjoy the day off, but there’s more can we do to reflect on the lives of the great men who have given us our freedom and led us to be the most powerful nation on this great planet. Don’t feel limited to only celebrating Veterans and military heroes on this day only; you can make a difference all year long! Here are some great things you and your kids can do to celebrate Veteran’s and Military on this very special day!

Step 1

FLY THE FLAG: Put your American Flag out or on the pole if you have one. If you don’t, go buy one as a family. Remember the rules, if it is raining, don’t put it out to get wet, if it is night, shine a light on it. Don’t let it touch the ground.

SOMETHING TO NOTE: If you have an American Flag that is worn and torn, give it to your local boy scouts troop and they will give it honors and properly dispose of it.

Step 2

EXPAND KNOWLEDGE: Take your kids to the library since they are home from school. Have them check out a book to read (not too large) about Memorial Day itself, or the different Branches of the Military, or some great Military leaders of our Past and Present. They could look up the origins of songs like, “The Star-Spangled Banner” by Francis Scott Key or Betsy Ross and our country’s different flags up until now. PRAY FOR OUR MILITARY, LIVING VETERANS, & PRESIDENT: Don’t take this lightly. There is power in prayer. God has put the military and President in power (no matter if you like it or not) and they need prayer for safety, to protect this nation, and make good decisions. The Bible says, “Prayer changes things.” Pray. Teach your children to pray for the Military, Veteran’s, the President and their families.

LEND A HELPING HAND: Start volunteering in your area to help people at a Veteran Hospital or not-for-profit agencies. Volunteer as a family. What military type platforms do our former President’s and current President encourage Americans to learn about and help in? Have them rake leaves or shovel snow for a Veteran you know for free. Encourage your kids to talk about what they are doing when they have “show and tell” at school. Give financially. Start a drive to send items needed for the soldiers in Iraq or Afghanistan or other place. Have your kids write and tell President Obama or someone in the Military what they did or are doing. Their mail may never reach the eyes of the President himself, but one of his staff will read it…and you never know!! The fact is, they are helping people and that is a good thing!

Tell them they can bring a change of clothes too, if they want for later during the meal. Have them bring any medals or memorablilia they may have to show your kids. Make the night all about honoring that person. Give the person a Thank You gift. Have your kids make Thank You cards or gifts to give him or her. Have your kids read a story or poem they wrote in honor of that person’s sacrifice or visit in their home. Take pictures.

BE A PEN PAL: Write to a military person overseas. Don’t JUST email. Writing letters is a great way to “make that person’s day” on a lonely battle field when electric may be down. Maybe one day you two will be able to meet in person.
